Spray Chambers
The spray chamber’s main function is to filter out the larger sample aerosol droplets, allowing only the small droplets to enter the plasma. A secondary function of the spray chamber is to smooth out the pulses which occur during the peristaltic pumping and nebulization process. Generally, two spray chamber designs are available for commercial ICP and ICP-MS instruments – double pass or cyclonic. Regardless of the design, minimizing the chamber’s internal volume, surface area, and transport path length can minimize carryover issues and analyte loss by adsorption.
Precision Glassblowing manufactures a wide variety of glass and quartz spray chambers for all makes and models of ICP and ICP-MS, available for immediate shipment. All spray chambers are manufactured to strict OEM-supplied prints and specifications, and are guaranteed to be direct replacements for the OEM equivalent parts.
The Scott-type is by far the most common type of double-pass chamber, and filters the sample aerosol droplets by size by directing the aerosol into a central tube. Gravity forces the larger aerosol droplets downward toward the drain upon exiting the central tube. The positive pressure created by a loop in the drain forces the smaller droplets upward (between the central tube and the outer spray chamber wall), where are transported to the plasma by way of the sample injector. Scott double-pass spray chambers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, and are generally considered the most rugged design for routine use.
The Cyclonic spray chamber separates sample aerosol droplets according to size by means of centrifugal force. The vortex action inside the chamber forces larger droplets to condense on the walls of the chamber, where they are lost to the drain. Smaller droplets are carried with the gas stream into the plasma. Cyclonic chambers are available with or without a baffle (see pictures above) to further separate out larger droplets.
In a comparison of the two designs, it is generally accepted that cyclonic chambers offer better sampling efficiency and increased solvent delivery to the plasma. For ICP-OES analyses, this typically translates into higher sensitivity and better detection limits. For ICP-MS, however, insufficient sensitivity is rarely a problem, and the increased solvent loading on the plasma has unfavorable effects on oxide formation, matrix decomposition and ionization efficiency. As such, the modified Scott-style is generally recommended for ICP-MS analyses.
Spray chamber temperature can have further effects on plasma loading and efficiency by influencing the amount of solvent vapor entering the plasma. The regulation of spray chamber temperature can be accomplished through the use of coolant jacketing or Peltier (piezoelectric) cooling devices.
All PG spray chambers can be custom-manufactured using any combination of the following features:

Nebulizers
Precision Glassblowing of Colorado manufactures the widest range of nebulizers available anywhere, including a complete line of borosilicate and quartz concentric nebulizers, and exclusive rights to the world renowned Noordermeer V-groove and the patented Modified Lichte nebulizers. All PG nebulizers are manufactured to strict specifications, and are guaranteed to be compatible with your ICP or ICP-MS instrument.
All Precision Glassblowing nebulizers are available in quartz or borosilicate glass, in conventional (pictured above right), with QD sample uptake fitting (pictured above middle), or with QDAC sample uptake and gas line fittings (pictured above left). Precision's QD fitting is the only fitting truly providing zero dead-volume between the sample uptake tubing and the internal capillary of the nebulizer, minimizing carryover and washout time.
Concentric Nebulizers
PG has spent the last several years developing a revolutionary design for optimal sample transport in their concentric nebulizers, resulting in nebulizer designs which yield unparalleled performance, consistency and stability. Manufactured by their master glassblowers, PG can offer virtually any combination of common Argon flow, PSI and sample flow rate. So, the next time you are looking for a concentric nebulizer, discover what the top instrument manufacturers have known for years.
The A-type nebulizer was the original concentric nebulizer design, and features an internal sample capillary ground flush to the nebulizer nose. Further advancements in the understanding of aerosol transport properties resulted in the development of the C-type nebulizer, which features an internal sample capillary slightly recessed in relation to the nebulizer nose. This design modification results in a more consistent aerosol and a higher tolerance for dissolved solids. The K-type nebulizer has since been developed in a response to a growing demand for reduced Argon gas flows. The K-type nebulizer functions much like a C-type but at a 30% lower argon flow (0.7 liter/minute compared to 1 liter/minute used by the C-type).
The Aerosalt nebulizer represents the latest in concentric nebulizer design, and features a proprietary tip design to maximize both aerosol consistency and dissolved solids tolerance. The result is a nebulizer capable of aspirating samples with high levels of dissolved solids while retaining the high sensitivity inherent in the concentric design. The Aerosalt operates on the same uptake ratings as the K-type nebulizer (30psi, 0.7 liter/minute).

Maximum Dissolved Solids Nebulizers
Precision Glassblowing Maximum Dissolved Solids Nebulizers (MDSNs) were designed as a cost-effective alternative to inert (Teflon or poly) nebs for non-HF high dissolved solids applications. Both the Noordermeer V-groove and Modified Lichte MDSN nebulizers operate using the same principles as the Babington nebulizer. The Noordermeer operates at 0.7 liters/min and is designed for use with either Scott style or cyclonic spray chambers. The MLN's patented design features an impingement bead to further increase sensitivity, and must be used with the specially designed Modified Lichte cyclonic spray chamber.
