e•SPEC™ Platinum ICP-MS Cones

As a compliment to our standard line of platinum cones, we also offer a unique line of enhanced e•SPEC™ products. The addition of the e•SPEC product line both enhances the functionality, and in many cases lowered the cost of these products, by replacing traditional Pt/Rh alloy with Pt/Ir. Platinum cones are not manufactured from pure platinum, as pure platinum is soft and more vulnerable to attack by certain acids and conditions. Alloying Pt to Rh or Ir (typically 90%/10%) increases the hardness of the metal and dramatically improves its resistance to such attack. Historically, the choice of Pt/Rh or Pt/Ir alloys has been largely due to the availability and price of raw materials, however, increasing demand for Rh in exhaust catalysts and glass manufacture, and unreliable supply of the metal has inflated the price of Rh. Based on our experience and independent metallurgical tests, platinum cones with Pt/10Ir inserts behave as well or better than Pt/10Rh, are less expensive, and do not impart a Rh background, however small. e•SPEC designs are based on extensive industry experience and unique expertise in the manufacture of high precision, analytical components, and are the result of collaborations with instrument companies and leading scientists in the field of plasma-mass spectrometry.

 

PLATINUM CONE REFURBISHING

Our refurbishing program can double or triple the lifetime of your platinum sample and skimmer cones. Send us your used and damaged cones and we will refurbish them for free. Upon receipt, we will inspect your cones to determine if they can be reconditioned to manufacturer’s specifications. Because of the different cone designs and different samples run, some cones may be refurbished many times and some not at all. Parts with mechanical problems (dropped cones or dinged tips) may or may not be able to be repaired depending on the nature and severity of the damage as well as the length of time the part has been used. We will only refurbish cones that we feel will perform well and have a reasonable lifetime. Turnaround time is usually about one month, but expedited service is available upon request.

The refurbishing process includes cleaning and/or reshaping the orifice, cleaning deposits and in severe cases some re-machining. Refurbishing does not replace metal that has been worn away by use. When the orifice of a well-used cone opens up to beyond the specification, the part is no longer serviceable and is ready for reclaim.

 

PLATINUM RECLAIM

Cone refurbishment can extend the useful lifetime of cones by thousands of hours, but inevitably, the cones will no longer be usable. They will either be damaged beyond repair, or will no longer have enough material to be reworked to manufacturer specifications. After a cone can no longer be refurbished, we will accept your cone back for Pt credit. We also accept injectors, crucibles and other platinum labware for credit based on the average market value for Pt, Au and their alloys. Depending on the amount of platinum, this credit can be worth hundreds of dollars.
